The Andaman and Nicobar are a group of islands off the coast of India. These group of islands are covered with lush green forests and stunning views. Surrounded by the Indian Ocean – the colour of the water a rich blue- these remains largely untouched by man. Currently, only Andaman is open to tourists. But this might change in the future if you don’t do something fast. Few days ago a development project was given the green signal which involves clearing 130 sq. kms of land off every vegetation. That is equivalent to approximately 24,290 football fields!
The project would be built over The Great Nicobar, the largest island on Nicobar. It is home to the Nicobarese and the Shompen tribes. As of 2016, the former tribe had a population of 27,168. It is also the largest nesting site of the Leatherback turtles.
Watch this video to quickly get familiar with the details of the project. You can create awareness by sharing this video with more people and by requesting the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change India to scrap/withdraw the project by tagging them on Twitter (details in post below).
While on one hand, goals and targets to reduce emissions and encourage sustainable innovations are being set by countries, on the other, we are going two steps back by clearing projects like these. We can’t let forests be destroyed like this. Social media platforms are powerful tools to get your voice heard. All we need is a lot of us lobbying for our One Earth.
